Dear business owners, let’s talk about cash registers!
Let’s talk about do’s and don’ts, let’s talk about why and why not’s most importantly let’s discuss how to Keep your money safe!
A lot of times as small business owners, mom and pop shops, or local stores and salons we tend to not copy the simple and overlooked practices of these big brands or these big businesses. When those things should be exactly what we pay attention to since it’s widely known that the smallest thing is what keeps an operation running flawlessly.
In my time as a retail security officer there were a few things that I saw being done in all kinds of stores on a regular basis. Here are a few that you and your staff can start or continue to implement to ensure the safety of your money. As well as a few counter measures against being robbed or broken into.
- Drop any bill greater then a $20 into the safe once you have more then one
- Never sit or stand with your back or side to the cash register
- Never leave the cash register slightly open for your convenience, always close and lock the drawer!
- If you are the only employee in the store and have to use the bathroom , or go out of sight of the door and cash register when there are no customers. Lock the door and put up a sign up that simply states “ Back in 5!” Or something of that context.
- At the end of every night empty your cash register drawers and lock funds in safe, depending on amount in safe I recommend making nightly bank deposits of cash not needed to run business the next day
- Do not give out change if the person is not making a purchase, as this is used as a ruse to get you to open the register so it can be at an easy access opportunity point for the robber.
- Always have at least one camera point at the cash register from behind this will do a few things. Like deter staff from stealing and catch a second image of the person who decided to Rob your store. Multiple clear images will assist in investigation.
